The Perfect 7-Day North Goa Itinerary

The Perfect 7-Day North Goa Itinerary

- Using a Luxury Villa in Mandrem as Your Base

The best Goa holidays are not just about the beaches you visit or the restaurants you discover. They are about having the right base — somewhere you genuinely want to return to at the end of the day. Somewhere that feels like a retreat, not just a place to sleep.

That is exactly what a luxury villa in Mandrem offers. Nestled in the quietest, most beautiful stretch of North Goa’s coastline, Mandrem is the perfect launching pad for a full week of exploration — with the Arabian Sea at your doorstep and everything North Goa has to offer within easy reach.

Here is how seven days in North Goa looks when your base is an Aroha Palms villa in Mandrem.

Before You Begin: Why Mandrem Works as Your Base

Mandrem sits in the northern arc of Goa’s coastline, roughly 30 minutes from the new Mopa International Airport and within comfortable driving distance of every major attraction in North Goa. Anjuna is 30 minutes south. Arambol is 15 minutes north. Panaji, the state capital, is about 45 minutes away. Chapora Fort, Old Goa, spice plantations, river cruises — all are day-trip territory.

This means you can unpack once, settle into your villa, and spend seven days exploring — always knowing that a private pool, a quiet terrace, and your own kitchen are waiting when you return. No packing up, no checking in and out. Just one beautiful home base for the whole holiday.

Day 1: Arrive, Settle In, and Let Mandrem Work Its Magic

There is a very deliberate reason your first day is devoted entirely to Mandrem itself. After the journey — the flight, the transfer, the excitement of arrival — the temptation is to immediately go somewhere. Resist it.

Settle into your villa. Take a swim in your private pool. Walk the five minutes to Mandrem Beach and let the pace of the place wash over you. The beach here is powder-soft and unhurried — a long, quiet sweep of sand bordered by casuarina trees on one side and the Mandrem Creek on the other.

In the evening, cross one of the wooden bridges over the creek into the village. The Mandrem market area has a handful of excellent restaurants, atmospheric bars, and small grocers. Try the fresh Goan seafood — fish curry, prawn balchão, or a simple grilled catch of the day. Go to bed early. Tomorrow, Goa begins.

Day 2: Explore the Northern Beaches — Ashwem, Morjim and the Creek

Day two is for discovering your immediate neighbourhood. Start the morning with a barefoot walk south along the shoreline from Mandrem to Ashwem Beach — a beautiful 20-minute stroll along the water’s edge.

Ashwem has earned a reputation as one of Goa’s most chic beach stretches. The famous La Plage restaurant — a beloved institution among Goa regulars — sits right on the sand here. Have a long, lazy lunch. Order the French-Goan fusion menu and one of their excellent cocktails.

In the afternoon, head north to Morjim Beach, where Olive Ridley sea turtles nest during the winter months. Morjim has a gentler, more local character than the busier beaches further south. Book a guided kayak tour through the Chapora River backwaters — an entirely different perspective on Goa’s coastline, drifting through mangrove forests with kingfishers and herons for company.

Return to your villa for a sundowner on the terrace. Day two well spent.

Day 3: Wednesday Market — Anjuna Flea Market and the Vagator Clifftop

If your trip falls on a Wednesday, this day is non-negotiable: the Anjuna Flea Market. Running every Wednesday from morning until sunset, it is one of Goa’s most iconic experiences — a sprawling open-air bazaar spread along the clifftops above Anjuna Beach, selling everything from hand-block-printed textiles and silverware to spices, local art, and handmade jewellery.

Anjuna is about 30 minutes from Mandrem. Arrive by mid-morning before the crowds build. Take your time, bargain happily, and stay for lunch at one of the beachside shacks below the market.

In the afternoon, drive a few minutes north to Vagator. The clifftop views here are dramatic — red laterite cliffs dropping to a crescent of dark sand, with the ruins of Chapora Fort visible in the distance. Watch the sunset from the cliffs, then drive back through the Goan countryside to your villa.

Day 4: Yoga, Wellness and a Slow Morning

Every good Goa itinerary has at least one day built around doing very little, done very well. Day four is that day.

Mandrem has a well-established wellness community. Book an early morning yoga class at one of the village’s respected schools — many offer open classes for all levels, set in shaded outdoor shalas overlooking paddy fields. The combination of a yoga class at dawn, followed by a quiet breakfast at your villa, followed by an hour in your private pool, is a very Mandrem kind of morning.

In the afternoon, book an Ayurvedic treatment at one of the spa centres in or near the village. Traditional Abhyanga massage, Shirodhara, or a simple deep-tissue treatment — Goa’s wellness practitioners are genuinely excellent and very affordable by international standards.

Spend the evening at Verandah restaurant in Mandrem — a graceful hillside spot serving globally inspired cuisine and artisan gin, with one of the most pleasant atmospheres in all of North Goa.

Day 5: Chapora Fort, Panaji and the Latin Quarter

Today is for history and culture. Start the morning at Chapora Fort — a 17th-century Portuguese fortification perched on a headland above the confluence of the Chapora River and the Arabian Sea. The ruins are atmospheric and the views are extraordinary. It is only a 20-minute drive from Mandrem and best visited in the early morning before the heat builds.

After the fort, drive south to Panaji — Goa’s beautiful, unhurried capital. The old Latin Quarter of Fontainhas is a UNESCO-listed heritage neighbourhood of Portuguese colonial houses painted in ochre, terracotta and pale yellow, with narrow cobbled lanes and a quiet, European atmosphere unlike anywhere else in India.

Have lunch in Panaji — the city has excellent cafes and traditional Goan restaurants along the riverside. Visit the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, one of Goa’s most photographed landmarks, before heading back through the Goan countryside to Mandrem in time for sunset.

Day 6: Arambol, the Sweetwater Lake and a Drum Circle Sunset

Arambol is Mandrem’s northern neighbour and its cultural opposite — bohemian, creative, and full of life. It is about 15 minutes from your villa and offers a completely different mood to Mandrem’s tranquillity.

Start with a walk along Arambol Beach, then follow the path over the northern headland to discover Kalacha Beach — a small, secluded cove where a freshwater lake meets the sea behind the dunes. It is a genuinely magical spot, particularly in the morning before visitors arrive.

Spend the afternoon exploring Arambol’s market stalls, cafes, and the beachside hamam. As sunset approaches, settle on the beach for Arambol’s famous drum circle — a nightly gathering of musicians, dancers, and spectators that has become one of Goa’s most beloved traditions. It is spontaneous, joyful, and unlike anything else in India.

Day 7: A Final Morning at the Villa — and One Last Goa Goodbye

Save your last morning entirely for your villa. One final swim in the private pool. Breakfast at your own pace on the terrace. A slow walk down to Mandrem Beach to say goodbye to the sea.

If your flight is in the evening, you have time for a late lunch at Café NU in Mandrem — a beloved local institution known for its wholesome food and relaxed garden setting. Or simply sit in your villa garden, let the sounds of Goa wash over you one last time, and resist the urge to look at your phone.

The best Goa holidays always end with a plan to return. That is not a coincidence. It is what Mandrem does to people.

A Few Practical Tips
  • Getting around: Hire a scooter for short trips or arrange a car and driver through your villa manager for day trips. Your Aroha Palms villa team can arrange this for you.
  • Best time to visit: November through February for perfect weather. March and April are warm but still lovely. May and June bring the pre-monsoon heat.
  • Wednesday trips: Plan your Anjuna Flea Market day for a Wednesday — it only runs once a week and is not to be missed.
  • Book ahead: Yoga classes and Ayurvedic treatments at the better wellness centres fill up quickly in peak season. Ask your villa manager to book on arrival.
