A Wellness Break in Mandrem, Without Signing Up to a Programme

Most wellness retreats hand you a timetable. A guide to building your own version in Mandrem, North Goa — the yoga village, on your own schedule.

There is a particular kind of tiredness that a week in a resort does not fix. You know the shape of what would help — early nights, moving your body, eating properly, a stretch of days with nothing booked in them. What you do not want is to be handed a timetable.

This is the problem with most wellness retreats. You arrive somewhere beautiful and are immediately institutionalised: fixed class times, communal meals at seven, a room you share, a programme you are gently chivvied along. For someone whose working life is already a series of other people's calendar invitations, paying a considerable sum to be put back on a schedule is a strange way to recover.

There is another way to do it, and North Goa is unusually well set up for it.

Why Mandrem

Mandrem sits in the far north of Goa, between Ashwem and Arambol. It is a long, quiet beach with a creek running parallel behind it and wooden bridges across to the sand. It is a turtle nesting site. There are shacks and cafés in season, but no clubs — and that absence is the whole character of the place.

People have been coming here to practise yoga for decades, and the village has organised itself around them without ever announcing it. There is no wellness district and almost nothing is signposted. What there is, is infrastructure: a concentration of experienced teachers, studios running drop-in classes through the season, Ayurvedic practitioners and massage therapists, and cafés that understand what people want to eat at seven in the morning.

That infrastructure exists because of the teacher-training schools — eight or so run here between November and April, with courses lasting three weeks or more. You do not have to enrol in any of them to benefit. Their presence is simply why the standard of the drop-in class down the road is higher here than it has any business being.

Building your own version

The appeal of doing this independently is that you decide the shape of it, and you can change your mind on Wednesday.

A week that works for most people looks roughly like this. Up early, because the light is good and the heat comes later. A class somewhere in the village, or your own practice on a terrace if you would rather not be in a room with strangers. Breakfast slowly. The middle of the day is too hot to be outside and is for reading, sleeping or the pool. Late afternoon is the beach. Evenings are early.

Around that you can thread whatever you want. Massage and Ayurvedic treatment are easy to arrange locally and easy to book at short notice outside the peak fortnight. Some people swim every day; some never get in the sea. Some take a class twice a day for a week and then stop entirely.

What you are buying with a private base, rather than a programme, is the ability to opt out of any of it without explaining yourself to anyone.

Where to stay

Aroha Palms sits about two kilometres back from Mandrem Beach, between a river and the hills — three Greek-inspired villas and four apartments on a single property, with private pools, a lawn and gardens.

Be clear about the distance. Two kilometres is a five-minute scooter ride, not a walk. If you intend to be at a beachfront studio every morning you will want two wheels, and they are simple to arrange. What you get in exchange is quiet of a kind the beachfront cannot offer at any price: set back from the road, with space and gardens around you rather than a neighbouring property three metres away.

The villas — Magnifica with four bedrooms, Paradiso and Serenity with five each — suit a couple who want the run of a house, a family, or a small group of friends taking the same week off together. Each has its own pool.

The apartments suit one or two people for a longer stay. They run from 1,200 sq ft two-suite apartments down to 400 sq ft studios, with king beds, lift access and full kitchens in the larger ones. Being able to make your own breakfast, at the hour you choose, turns out to matter more over three weeks than almost anything else on the list.

Taken as a whole the property sleeps 36, which also makes it workable for a group taking a private week together — a set of colleagues, or friends who have been promising each other this for years.

If you are not fully switching off

Most people doing this are not disappearing entirely, and the apartments were built with that in mind: dedicated workstations, lift access, reliable space to take a call away from everyone else. A morning practice, a working middle of the day and a free evening is a sustainable rhythm, and a surprising number of guests extend once they find it.

If a working month rather than a week is what you have in mind, we have written separately about what that actually involves.

Getting here

Mandrem is about 30 kilometres from Manohar International Airport at Mopa — roughly forty minutes. Dabolim, in the south, is more than double the distance and can take two hours in season. If you are booking flights, check which airport you are landing at before you book anything else.

When to come

November to February is the season: dry, warm, everything open, and the busiest and most expensive stretch. March and April are hotter, markedly quieter and better value, and most of the village is still running. The monsoon, June to September, is green and almost empty — good for someone who wants to be indoors and left alone, no good at all if the beach is the point.

If the aim is genuinely to rest, the shoulder weeks in late February and March are the ones to look at. Same weather, considerably fewer people, and the village back to its own pace.
